Anaesthetic Risks and Complications

Anaesthetic Risks and Complications

There is no safer place in the world to be anaesthetised than in Australia.

Nevertheless, some patients are at an increased risk of complications because of health problems e.g. heart or respiratory disease, diabetes or obesity, age and/or because of the type of surgery which they are undergoing.

More common side effects/complications

Nausea & Vomiting

Although post-op nausea and vomiting (PONV) can occur it is usually transient and there are measures that your anaesthetist can take to help. It is important to realise that many instances of PONV are not due to the anaesthetic itself as there are many factors that can contribute to nausea including some that we just can’t explain or have no control over. It is important to tell your anaesthetist if you have had previous problems with PONV or motion sickness so that they can tailor your anaesthetic to try and minimise your risk.
